Restaurant review: Mortons, Dickens Heath

Summary Background Color: Purple

It was a Wednesday evening, we couldn’t be bothered to cook and wanted something tasty and not too expensive. So we headed up to Mortons in Dickens Heath which is open every day for coffee, brunch, lunch, and dinner.

Feeling fishy

Not very exciting for a restaurant review I know but the 3 of us all decided to have exactly the same thing! We went for that good old British classic – fish and chips. 2 adult portions, and a child’s.

The haddock was beautifully battered, the chips just they way I like them – thin but not too skinny. We ate early, about 5.30pm, and the restaurant was quiet, with a few other diners, but still had atmosphere. There were a few more people sitting in the bar area, which contributed to the warm and welcoming atmosphere. Our waitress was lovely, very helpful and friendly, which makes a huge difference to an evening.

Fun fishy facts

  • Did you know that there are nearly ten times as many fish and chip shops in the UK than there are McDonalds?! Who knew!
  • Apparently, we Brits spend over £1 billion on fish and chips each year. That’s a lot of dough. Well, potatoes actually.
  • 81% of people prefer cod. Don’t blame, them, better than that haddock with the black skin.
  • Birmingham residents add curry sauce to their chips more than any other city in the UK. Who works this stuff out? And why?!
  • An average portion of fish, chips and peas contains 7.3% fat in comparison to a pork pie which has 10.8% fat. That makes me feel better about my food choices!
