For those on a budget this half term in Solihull

You can have great fun with a stay-at-home games day. It just needs a little planning beforehand. Make sure you have some board games at the ready – and if you don’t have any, or they’re all ‘boring’ to the kids, you could head to your local charity shop, they always have a collection of jigsaw puzzles and board games.

Other games you can play indoors include setting up your own treasure hunt, where they have to find the treasure (chocolate bar?!) by finding clues and following the trail.

Many kids love a challenge, so why not set them a reading challenge over half term where they have to read a page a day or a book over the week, depending on their ability. Or challenge them to a drawing competition – there’s some great videos on YouTube where they teach you how to easily draw animals and cartoon characters.

In this technological age sometimes we forget about the simple things like card games – there’s great fun to be had playing Uno, snap, Go Fish, and Rummy – the rules are pretty simple and it brings out everyone’s competitive side! And if you want to get even simpler just grab paper and a pen and play hangman or noughts and crosses. If you’ve got any leftover paper why not Google some origami ideas and see if you can create origami animals or hats.

For those feeling more creative you could get you kids to build a fort – all you need are chairs, towels, sheets, maybe a clothes airer – as well as the promise they’ll tidy it all up at the end of the day! Kids love a den so once they’ve built it maybe they can have a snack and watch a film in there for a bit.

Ideas on where to go if it’s raining

It’s always handy to have some ideas at the ready for those rainy days this half term in Solihull when no-one quite knows what to do with themselves.

  • Adventure golf at Four Ashes Golf Centre in Dorridge. It’s only £11.50 for 2 children, and there’s a coffee shop there for a hot chocolate treat afterwards.
  • Head to the Parkridge Centre in Brueton Park – they have a range of half term activities such as Teeny Tiny Den Building, Campfire Fun & Hot Chocolates, and Nature Tots.
  • Umberslade Adventure in Hockley Heath open up in the school holidays and will tire your kids out! Get ready for low ropes and commando courses, zip lines, den building, tree climbing, archery, and nature trails.
